SALT LAKE CITY, (Oct. 22, 2024) – The Office of the Great Salt Lake Commissioner, the Jordan River Commission, the Utah Lake Authority and the Bear Lake Regional Commission will now meet regularly to coordinate and communicate for the betterment of the Great Salt Lake Basin.
The four organizations are committed to meeting every six months and communicating regularly about ongoing projects, funding and operations. The improved collaboration will benefit stakeholders and Great Salt Lake Basin residents. From Bear Lake down to Utah Lake, and all of the reservoirs, lakes, rivers, streams and creeks in between, these water bodies share a basin and play a crucial role in it.
“We need to make sure we’re all pulling in the same direction within the Great Salt Lake Basin,” Deputy Great Salt Lake Commissioner Tim Davis said. “We laid out all of our plans and for the first time, we’re committed to working and communicating together going forward.”
“We are all one connected water system,” Luke Peterson, Utah Lake Authority executive director said. “It’s important for us to work together the same way nature does.”
In 2023, the Utah Legislature created the Office of the Great Salt Lake Commissioner. The commissioner is tasked with developing and maintaining a strategic plan as well as coordinating collaborative work among all agencies and interests in relation to the lake.
The Jordan River Commission was created by an Interlocal Cooperation Agreement in 2010 to facilitate regional implementation of the Blueprint Jordan River, serve as a technical resource to local communities, and provide a forum for coordination of planning, restoration and responsible development along the Jordan River corridor.
The Utah Lake Authority was created in 2022 to replace the Utah Lake Commission. It coordinates the management of Utah Lake and is dedicated to fostering a vibrant recreational environment, facilitating enhancements and implementing sustainable management practices at Utah Lake.
The Bear Lake Regional Commission was formed in 1973 to provide long-term direction and guidance in addressing the needs and problems of the Bear Lake area and to preserve and promote Bear Lake’s environment and the Bear Lake Basin resources.
